When I first started drawing with pencil I did not take it seriously. It was play. I was actually surprised to discover I could render a decent drawing. My passion at the time was mountain biking, and like a child, I wanted to capture the details of the rides I loved so much. The result was dozens of small, intensity detailed drawings that were recognizable. From there I moved onto larger works in graphite. Pencil is a magical medium. It's like an extension of my fingers. Using only black on white taught me much about colour, which I use today in my gouache works.

A tiny piece of a mountain broke off and fell into the forest below. As the rock fractured and rolled, the trees were buried deep. When all movement stopped, renewal began. The forest was up to the challenge, especially the little one; a perch on the very lip of a crack.

Destined to be logged, the gnarled forms of the trees along the rocky base of this cliff record such effort to survive. I painted knowing the saws would soon arrive, and prayed for a miracle. While putting the final touches on the imagined footpath, I noticed several areas lighter than the rest, and then I saw the Madonna Of The Rocks.

Fear is like a found penny, you can pick it up and use it or risk having it haunt you all day.

Inspired by the Lindmark Trail, Mt Revelstoke NP, Canada. Like pillars, the rocks and trees line the trail and create a gateway as the path turns and leads into another unknown.

Naughty bike riders built their trail right on the toes of the giants. At least they were polite enough to use a bridge so those ancient toes would not be bruised. Such a wonderful ride.

It Just Takes Time
It Just Takes Time is a series of drawings which are the result of my daily meditation. Early every morning I retreat to my studio for an hour or two and pick up a pencil to draw. Each of these large drawings has taken an incredible amount of time. Yet time is irrelevant in the process, for every stroke of my pencil is a timeless moment, only the drawing and the tools in my hand have any significance.
Each work is done on 100% cotton paper, and are of various sizes ranging from approximately 38" x 50" to 50" x 70". An assortment of graphite pencils are use, from extra large to small. Tissues, erasers, blending stumps all come to hand when needed. It is the process that describes the end result. The images are of places I treasure.
The end goal is to be able to walk into my drawing –to step into that marvelous space of light and dark that graphite work creates.
The four years it has taken me to produce this body of work can be likened to a period of rest, thus my choice of the pencil, which is such an undemanding medium. It is a record of time spent in slow contemplation of lyrical lines and textures found in the forest and mountains around Revelstoke. BC. Each piece has taken so long to produce that the beginning is often forgotten before the end. The images shift and change slowly over time much like the way things in the forest shift and change over time. It just takes time, and that is what this body of work is about, taking time to create something just right at just this moment in time. It is more about grace than meaning.

It Just Takes Time - Seeing the Exhibition
“A pencil is like an extension of my hand; there is nothing between me and the paper. The image flows through me, becomes a reality that only moments before was a blank sheet. It is a selfish moment when I draw, exclusive of all else. The end result is a personal indulgence, to see what I want to see, an aching perfection, yet still a mere shadow of the inspiration. Pencil is so simple, yet evokes all the shades of light. Texture is like knitting, repetitive yet so rich with variation. 2B 4B 6B, my goodness sometimes even 9B! That’s it.
And with time, I can stand back and step into a drawing that is just right.”

A small pond at the top of Mount Revelstoke reflects the scars of a fire long ago. A history written in the slow change of an alpine meadow.
Medium: Pencil Drawing, Size: 38 x 50 inches
A large pencil study capturing the mystery of dark water as the path carries on through Bear Creek Park. This work reflects grief and loss. It is about the darkness of things which cannot be changed, and yet even in the dark reflections there is light. The path carries forward across the bridge into a future undefined yet always there. Being an artist is like that, you feel the pain, reflect on it, and then move forward towards creating something more.

A very large pencil study capturing the stillness and movement of cedar forest. This drawing is the result of many months of work using simple pencil strokes, 2b 4b 6b. Layers of pencil marks, soft blending techniques. Most of all, it is a study of the slowness of the momentum of change in the forest.

A beautiful trail through a deep canyon to a waterfall. Turning about, away from the falls, the crumbling bridges beneath massive trees leaning into the depths of rock held much more interest. Thus, “Fletcher” is here without the falls, one of many small pencil studies of trails around southern BC.
