When I was very young I started painting with oil paint. By the time I was in my mid twenties I had developed a severe sensitivity to oil. The same happened later with acrylic based paints. I am a painter, it's what defines me. Watercolours were the solution. They are very portable, and given that this period of my life was spent walking tens of thousands of kilometers on wilderness trails, they provided a perfect solution.
Small works morphed into bigger studies, each one a challenge to use the white of the paper to define form and space. Many layers of colour were used to gain the intensity I experienced in reality. Thirty years of watercolours taught me much, and often left me in wonder of how a white piece of paper could become so alive. I am still in awe of how paint and paper come together this way.
